KTSF News Inaugurates Special Features Unit
Weeklong Chinese-language Coverage of Major Topics
San Francisco - December 11, 2006 - Tonight, KTSF will broadcast the first in a series of in-depth news programming produced by its new special features unit. Forgotten Memories--Forty years after the Cultural Revolution, sponsored by Chrysler, is the first project of this special features unit. The unit's purpose is to provide extended coverage of important topics to Chinese Americans. During the next twelve months the KTSF news department will produce multiple special features. Each topic will be presented over a period of consecutive days with coverage in both the Cantonese and Mandarin newscasts each weeknight, a live Talk Tonight program dedicated to the subject and a one hour special broadcast on Saturday night. The reports will be produced primarily in Mandarin with Chinese subtitles. The series has an ambitious production schedule for 2007 with topics including history, politics, culture, entertainment and technology.
Forgotten Memories commemorates the 40th anniversary of the birth of China's Cultural Revolution. The Cultural Revolution was a massive political movement initiated by the Chairman Mao Tse Tung in 1966. The ensuing political upheaval brought about ten years of economic and social chaos in China. By interviewing a number of expatriate survivors of the Cultural Revolution, the special unit will present a series of reports that will revisit the bygone era and also the strength of the human spirit. "The Cultural Revolution is not just about private and personal loss," Dongmei Li, the producer of Forgotten Memories says, "it is about mankind's ability to persevere despite struggles with painful memories."
Starting tonight, feature segments of Forgotten Memories will be broadcast each weeknight in both the Cantonese News and Mandarin News. On December 14th, at 11:00pm, KTSF's live talk show, Talk Tonight, will invite scholars to discuss the Cultural Revolution. The complete, one-hour broadcast of Forgotten Memories, along with a roundtable discussion, will air on December 16th at 7:00pm.
One major series scheduled in March focuses on economic development in the more remote areas of western China. KTSF news staffers Mei-Ling Sze and Kwokshu Leung report from regions of China far from the dramatic economic successes of cities like Shanghai. Their stories will profile the triumph of the human spirit in the less developed areas of China.
