With colder weather expected in the coming weeks, Bay Area home owners should protect their pipes from damage caused by low temperatures. The East Bay Municipal Utilities Department (MUD) explains that frozen water in exposed pipes and irrigation valves can expand and cause cracks that damage equipment. To prevent frozen pipes, homeowners can buy insulating materials from hardware stores, shut-off irrigation systems, and keep outdoor faucets closed.
