San Francisco’s Chinese community today mourned the passing of billionaire philanthropist Warren Hellman who died of leukemia on Sunday at the age of 77.
At a memorial service today, many Chinese community leaders expressed their gratitude for Hellman’s consistent support of the Chinese community, particularly his efforts to ensure that Chinese Americans could fully participate in the city’s political life through voting and running for public office.
San Francisco Supervisor Carmen Chu said,”Mr. Hellman certainly was an individual who really understood what it meant for political empowerment of the Chinese community. He supported many individuals. He supported myself when I ran for supervisor.”
“He was always very very supportive of the Chinese community,” added California Assemblymember Fiona Ma. “Anything the community needed, we could always count on him. So really we are losing a legend.”
