Coping family and cultural challenges for Chinese American patients with diabetes

Research team partners culturally-adapted a widely used cognitive behavioral diabetes management intervention that was originally used with European Americans. This cultural adaptation process was based on published clinical guidelines for work with Asian Americans, research team members’ extensive knowledge of Chinese American immigrants, and prior research team findings on cultural and family challenges to type 2 diabetes management among Chinese Americans. The resulting culturally adapted intervention titled, ” Chinese Coping Skills Training,” was systematically tested with Chinese American immigrant participants in this study. The CCST intervention targeted the following key coping skills relevant to diabetes management: problem solving , communication , conflict resolution and self-talk skills.
