The most important differences between Caucasian and Asian skin is the concentration of the melanin in their skin. Melanin causes dark spots and sun spots on the skins.
Dr. Siegrid Yu at UCSF said, “Caucasian skin tends to show signs of aging earlier with fine lines and wrinkles where Asian skin because of this increase of pigmentation often shows the signs of aging first by developing hyper pigmentation of dark spots or sun spots and it shows the aging process more by the change in color on the skin.”
The best way to prevent dark spots from happening is avoid excess sunlight and use sunscreen. If dark spots appear, it’s better to see a dermatologist before seeking any treatment.
Dr. Yu explains, “There is many different causes of dark spots. They can be very superficial on your skin, or very deep in the skin and the treatment is very different for each one of the issues. There are some dark spots that can responded to topical creams and lightning agents and there are some better served by removal with lasers.”
Day spas and dermatologic clinics also provide so-called “photo facial” treatments and some claim that it can be used for treating brown spots, broken capillaries, and boosting collagen.
However, photo facial is a generic term for a skin treatment that uses some kind of light-based technology. The two main types of technology used for photo facials are LED and IPL (intense-pulsed light). They are completely different, so it’s extremely important to understand which photo facial technology is being used. That way you are more likely to get the results you hope to achieve.
