An adventurous group of Taiwanese elders is bringing a unique message of hope and inspiration to nursing homes and senior centers throughout California—on their motorcycles! With the motto “Wei Shaio,” or “We Shall,” and a hand gesture meaning “pass along the smile,” these “grandriders” prove that it’s never too late to fulfill your dreams! The group of 80 to 90 year olds made history in 2007 with their 13 day, 730 mile motorcycle tour around the entire island of Taiwan. This journey was depicted in the award winning documentary “Go Grandriders,” which broke sales records in both Taiwan and Hong Kong in 2012. One of the first stops for the grandriders on their 11-day trip down the California coast is On Lok Lifeways, one of the leading senior health plans in the Bay Area, known for its innovative approach to providing eligible frail seniors all the support they need to enable them to age in place gracefully, remain living at home and avoid costly, impersonal institutional care. The grandriders’ tour is sponsored by the Hondao Senior Citizen’s Welfare Organization of Taiwan that promotes active aging and aging in place.
