KTSF's Chinese-Language Newscast Inducted into The Paley Center for Media (formerly the Museum of Television & Radio)
America's Largest Asian-Language Broadcaster Honored for Outstanding Local Programming

July 1, 2008 (San Francisco, Calif.) - KTSF Television, the nation's largest Asian-language broadcast station, today announced that its "Cantonese Newscast" (February 6, 1989 episode) was selected by The Paley Center for Media, in partnership with the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) and the Television Bureau of Advertising (TVB), for inclusion in the Paley Center's permanent collection.

KTSF's winning submission, titled "First Live U.S. Chinese-Language Newscast," is considered a program of social and historical importance by the Paley Center. The Cantonese newscast premiered as the first, live local Chinese-language newscast in the United States to enthusiastic audience feedback.

Less than four months after its February 1989 launch, the Tiananmen Square protests dramatically unfolded in China. KTSF and its team of experienced Chinese-speaking journalists quickly became a critical resource of up-to-the-minute news coverage and analysis for the Bay Area, including mainstream network television stations.

KTSF was uniquely well-positioned in 1989, as it is today, to provide in-depth reporting of news and information relevant to San Francisco Bay Area's Chinese community. It is the only U.S. television station to broadcast nightly, live news programming in Cantonese and Mandarin. The "Cantonese Newscast" airs weeknights at 7 PM and Saturdays at 6 PM. The "Mandarin Newscast" airs weeknights at 10 PM and Sundays at 6 PM.

"Local television is replete with examples of stations’ programming really making a difference in their markets," said Pat Mitchell, president and CEO of The Paley Center for Media. "We are delighted to honor some of the best examples of this from across the country as a way of recognizing how effective local television has been in conveying important information while generating positive community actions."

"We are extremely proud to part of the Paley Center's permanent collection," said Michael Sherman, General Manager of KTSF. "KTSF's daily Chinese-language newscast continues to be a well-respected and important news source on issues vital to San Francisco's Chinese community. Our viewers can always count on our three decades of award-winning experience and credibility."

"First Live U.S. Chinese-Language Newscast" will be available for viewing at the Paley Center's libraries in both the New York and Los Angeles facilities, home to a collection of more than 140,000 programs covering almost 100 years of television and radio history.
